At the Blade Show® a few weeks ago, Goldie scouted the show for handle materials she liked. On one supplier’s table she found a few pieces of spalted maple that had been dyed and stabilized. The colors fit right into the gold to brown range she is always looking for, with strong, vibrant color and a beautiful "spalted" pattern .

The original Stingray was one of the first folders SOG ever produced and was a heavy-duty work knife. In late 2008, they introduced the Stingray 2.0. The Vanguard is Buck's answer to the Loveless Drop Point Hunter. Since it was introduced by Bob Loveless in the 1960s, the drop point has been the accepted standard for hunting blade shapes. The Tortoise Celluloid used on these two slip joint folders is such an example. There have been knives produced in the past decade with tortoise celluloid, but it has a different appearance. This old material is more cloudy and has more red coloring rather than gold.
