about this product

The war in the Middle East had hardly begun when I started to design a large combat/bowie knife that would be suitable for that area of the world.  I have never, in my 48 years in this business, had so much trouble bringing a project to a conclusion.  I wanted a superior high-carbon steel that would hold an edge extremely well and be tough enough for what troops might put it through.  In our search for this superior steel, we were presented with the opportunity to acquire a batch that had been developed for a firm who filed bankruptcy and went out of business.  We worked with Dan Maragni, the very talented knife-maker/metallurgist who developed the original steel, to develop a special heat treatment for our use.  We even re-built salt bath vessels and quench tanks to accommodate the precision hardening of this steel to give us the best possible toughness and edge retention.  Our designation for the steel with this special heat-treat is DM-1.

My concept for the handle is what I call an Omni-Directional Grip.  I developed the shape that the handle should take to guarantee that with a firm grip, your hand would not slip forward or backward.  Phil Gibbs and I then developed the Omni-Directional pattern for the grooves in the handle material to double the positive grip.  With this shape and surface, a guard became irrelevant.  We included the guard simply to provide a place for thong holes to allow the knife to be secured to a pole or limb for use as a spear or pole arm.

This knife is produced making use of the best of today's technology but the finish grind, the mark, assembly and sharpening is completed in our own shop.  The blade coating is Chromium Carbonitride which is even harder than the steel itself at almost 90 Rc.  The hardness of the steel is 58-59 Rc.  Because DM-1 is a non-stainless steel, the sharpened edge will be subject to rust so we have coated it with our RustFree™ to protect it.  You should wipe the knife down after a day of use and re-coat it with a rust prohibitive like RustFree™ (RF125 . . 1.25 oz. . . $7.95).

The blade measures 7-3/4" from tip to guard, is 2-1/8" at the widest point and 3/16" thick.  The handle scales are CNC machined green Rucarta™.  We have created a small storage cavity in the handle by cutting an opening through the tang and milling a small hollow in the back side of each handle scale.  Carry a standard Allen wrench tucked in the pocket on the front of the sheath to access small emergency items you might store there.  The cavity measures 1-7/8" x 5/8" and just over 1/4" deep.  The Ballistic Nylon sheath is made with a Kydex® liner for safety, a pouch on the front that will hold a standard pistol clip or a large folding knife, and is M.O.L.L.E. compatible.  I think of this as an extreme Camp Knife, the kind of knife I would like for my USMC grandson to have if he were deployed.  Measures 13-1/4" overall and weighs 12.8 oz. The knife and sheath are both made in the U.S.A.

A.G. Russell Knives

From the age of nine I made homemade knives until I was about twenty-four when I began to make handmade knives, crude but no longer made at home. A few years later, I had met and learned from makers like R.W. Loveless and R. L. Dozier. I made knives until the mid 1970s. I don’t make handmade knives anymore, as my hands aren’t what they used to be. However, I do have very talented makers in the United States and Japan who make knives that I am proud to put my name on. I design pocketknives, one hand knives, lockbacks, and fixed blade knives and have them made to our standards. ~A.G. Russell III
