developed by Mastersmith Jerry Lairson, Sr. for Cutting Competitions

Jerry Lairson says "I have been building custom knives for fifty-five years and it’s my favorite thing to do." He goes on to say "I learned more about what makes a knife work properly in ten years of competing in knife cutting contests than I learned in the previous forty years of knifemaking."

Cutting competitions have become very popular attractions in the knife community. These contests grew out of the fact that knifemakers want to compare the quality of their knives to those make by other knifemakers. Most knifemakers participate in these competitions with knives they design and make themselves. After every competition they work to build a new knife based on what they have learned, in preparation for the next contest.

In the marketplace today, there are several production knives based on some of the top performing knives in these competitions. For several years, we have sold one designed by Jim Crowell and Reggie Barker, and produced by Browning®. It is a well-made and practical knife and we have sold a lot of them. The thing that makes Jerry’s different enough for us to produce it under the A. G. Russell™ brand is the tuning fork under the handle scales. Jerry has designed this in such a way that the tuning fork is cut into the tang when the blade blank is cut from the piece of steel. It is meant to help the user develop the best cutting technique. Strike the knife against a solid object and you will feel the fork vibrate. When you strike the edge at the "sweet spot", or at the point for best cutting power, you will feel no vibration. Continue to practice until you can consistently hit the right spot. Only practice can teach one the best cutting technique. The tuning fork shortens the time. Certainly this applies for those preparing for a competition, but it also applies to those of us who just want to be able to cut limbs, brush and small trees with less energy expended.

The 9-7/8" blade of Chinese SK5 High Carbon steel at 55-57 Rc. is 2" wide at it widest point and is cut from 1/4" steel stock (the blade thickness is actually 0.23", just under the 1/4"). The hole at the top of the blade near the handle is intended as a safety feature. It is meant to hold a thong which you wrap around your hand to keep the knife from spinning out of control if your grip on the handle fails. The handle is carved from Spanish Olive Wood which is hand textured for a positive grip and then stained. Measures 14-7/8" overall and weighs 14.6 oz. Includes a brown leather sheath designed by Jerry specifically for this knife. Made in Taiwan.

A.G. Russell Knives

From the age of nine I made homemade knives until I was about twenty-four when I began to make handmade knives, crude but no longer made at home. A few years later, I had met and learned from makers like R.W. Loveless and R. L. Dozier. I made knives until the mid 1970s. I don’t make handmade knives anymore, as my hands aren’t what they used to be. However, I do have very talented makers in the United States and Japan who make knives that I am proud to put my name on. I design pocketknives, one hand knives, lockbacks, and fixed blade knives and have them made to our standards. ~A.G. Russell III

A.G. Russell has been in the knives and whetstones business for over 50 years. A.G. Russell knives are well known for their quality. A.G. Russell knives tend to be more traditional in style and look, with modern advances in material and design to create excellent knives.
