Order Details

Until the latter half of the 19th Century, hunting knives were very personal, made to order by the local blacksmith or by someone like a surgical instrument maker. It was that, or use one or more of the home's butcher knives. Only in Northern California was there enough wealth to support custom knifemakers before the 20th century. In the last quarter of the 19th century Webster Marble, J. B. Champlain and to a lesser extent, the well established John Russell Company began to make hunting knives for the American public. The earliest of those were little more than smaller butcher knives with bone, antler, ivory or checkered wood handles. It was either Marbles or the Cattaraugus Co that was the first to move to thicker steel and the race was on. Knife companies around the world jumped on the bandwagon and as fast as a company came out with a new design it would appear in the knife company catalogs throughout the United States and Europe.

With these knives I am trying to go back to the early 20th century, without copying any specific pattern and give you the feel that would have led the hunters of the day to carry one of these knives into the deer woods.

The A. G. Russell™ Classic Hunter begins with a 4-1/4" x 1-1/4" x 1/8" thick piece of 8Cr13MoV stainless hardened to 57-59 Rc. and hollow ground to the top of the blade. We have used this steel in many of our traditional folders and our customers tell me that it is a great, hard working knife steel. The guard and butt are made of highest quality, lightweight aircraft alloy. Black leather sheath. Made in Taiwan.

The "Black Beauty" handle was first made in the 1920s-1930s and consists of alternating black fiber and brass spacers, both durable and handsome. Weighs approximately 5.8 oz.

A.G. Russell Knives

From the age of nine I made homemade knives until I was about twenty-four when I began to make handmade knives, crude but no longer made at home. A few years later, I had met and learned from makers like R.W. Loveless and R. L. Dozier. I made knives until the mid 1970s. I don’t make handmade knives anymore, as my hands aren’t what they used to be. However, I do have very talented makers in the United States and Japan who make knives that I am proud to put my name on. I design pocketknives, one hand knives, lockbacks, and fixed blade knives and have them made to our standards. ~A.G. Russell III

A.G. Russell has been in the knives and whetstones business for over 50 years. A.G. Russell knives are well known for their quality. A.G. Russell knives tend to be more traditional in style and look, with modern advances in material and design to create excellent knives.
