Knives in the Wihongi Signature series from Browning® have been designed in collaboration with Jared Wihongi, one of the world's foremost law enforcement edged-weapons instructors, based on his Maori heritage. The Maorian people are indigenous to New Zealand, having arrived there over 1000 years ago from their mythical Polynesian homeland. Over several centuries of isolation, the Polynesian people developed a unique culture known as "Maori" which includes it's own mythology and unique performing arts and crafts. Maori symbols are often stylized tattoos and carvings. These decorations are added to their weapons to represent a warrior ancestor whose strength and courage you carry with you into battle. The Maori designs on the Wihongi Signature line of blades are intended to honor the warrior spirit that lives in each of us.
While the "Kukri" originated in Nepal and is used by the Gurkha troops from that country, you might envision Jared's Maorian ancestors carrying a similar tool into battle. Its heavy point and lightweight handle, combined with the forward curve, make it a very effective tool in combat or in the jungle. The 9" full tang blade is 8Cr14MoV stainless steel at 58-59 Rc. and measures 2-1⁄8" at its widest point. The satin finished blade has a Maori warrior tribal motif etched into the surface on both the obverse and reverse sides. The handle scales are black and tan sculpted, layered G-10 with flush-fit fasteners and a lanyard hole. Ships with a black Kydex® sheath with a quick release belt clip and eyelets allowing you to lash it to your gear. Measures 14-7⁄8" overall and weighs 1 lb. 2.5 oz. Made in China. Suggested retail is $129.99.
