There are many different shapes of blades and handle combinations that have at one time or another been called a Bowie knife. We only have to take a look at one of the several books written about the history of Bowie knives to understand the confusion that has happened over the years.
A.G.'s version is based on the English-style Bowie knives D. E. (Ed) Henry made beginning in the 1960s. Ed Henry was the maker of the finest handmade "English" style Bowies. He made knives at a time when there was no computer driven machinery to cut or grind, and all the work was done by hand. No one surpassed the quality of his work. His guards were so well fitted you could not tell if the knives were machined in one piece or if you were looking at the world's finest solder job. Utilizing modern processes, we have worked to accomplish that same fit with ours.
We introduced the A.G. Russell Shopmade California Bowie in 2013. A little over a year ago A.G. decided that we should create a smaller version and created the Gold Field Bowie. The size is unobtrusive and rides very comfortably on the belt for every day use. The 5-3⁄4" blade is 154-CM at 59-61 Rc. With current technology, we were able to fit the stainless steel guard as well as the ones on Ed's knives. You cannot tell where the blade ends and the guard begins. The handle scales are carefully book matched Wild Olive from South Africa. Measures 9-1⁄4" from from tip to butt. Weighs 4.2 oz. The knife is produced in our shop in Rogers, Arkansas. Includes a handcrafted brown leather sheath.
