An A.G. Russell Exclusive
Ed and Tanya Van Hoy have been making knives, and their own Damascus, for over 30 years. This is a team effort. The design for the Valkyrie, and the work, is a joint effort from the two of them. A.G. Russell provided a board of cocolobo and worked with Tanya, who cuts and shapes the handles. Ed tells me he does the grinding. They share the rest of the work, including communicating with us.
For the Valkyrie (Norse for "chooser of the slain") they chose their Odin pattern Stainless Damascus at about 63 Rc. The design is a combination of two knives, a boot knife and a dagger. While it does not have a double grind, the slim drop point blade has a narrow swedge on the top of the front half of the blade. The position of the finger groove for the index finger slightly forward, and the placement of the groove for the thumb, allows a better pushing or thrusting position. This provides a more natural placement in the hand than most double guard style handles. It's a more ergonomic feel.
The handle scales are cocobolo from our supply. With a full tapered tang, the knife measures 7-3/4" tip to butt. The blade measures 3-1/2", that leaves a 4-1/4" handle. Weighs 4.2 oz. Includes a brown leather belt pouch style sheath, also made by the Van Hoys.
