Damasteel Blade Limited to 100 Pieces

It was in 1987 that A.G. first introduced the A.G. Russell™ One Hand Knife™ (model K87). During the rest of the 1980s and through the 1990s, that knife was offered in five different versions. Four were the same size, utilizing the same handle but with different blades including a General Purpose blade and a modified sheepsfoot that became a Hunter/Skinner with a plain edge, a partially serrated version and a version with a fully serrated blade which A.G. called the Paramedic. There was also a smaller version which we simply called the Small General Purpose. A small quanitiy of the large general purpose blade was made with Cowry Damascus from Japan. The Damascus was very limited and available for only a short time.

At home, A.G. often worked on his knife designs on our dining room table. After he passed away, I decided to organize all the papers, etc. that were scattered from one end of the table to the other. In additon to other interesting things, I found a drawing of an idea for an A.G. Russell One Hand Knife with a dagger style blade. I had never seen that drawing before but knew that we had to make that knife.

We started working on this new model in May/June 2019, hoping we could deliver a few before year end. Development and production took a bit longer than we had hoped.

The dagger model utilizes the same handle that we use for all the General Purpose models. It is only the blade that is different. These are the first two to be delivered. Both have a plain solid stainless steel handle and no handle scales. Available with Bohler N690 stainless at 58-60 Rc. and Rose Pattern Damasteel at 60-62 Rc. The handle, which is machined from a solid piece of stainless spring steel, works in conjunction with the blade to create an unusual locking system. This locking system, and the location of a thumb stud on both sides of the blade, allows the knife to be closed or opened one handed using either the right or left hand. While the knife measures only 3-7/8" closed, there is a full 3-1⁄8" of blade from the front of the handle to the tip of the blade and it measures nearly 7/8" wide at the kick - as much blade as we could possibly put into this size handle. Weighs approximately 2.5 oz. Made in Maniago, Italy.

A.G. Russell Knives

From the age of nine I made homemade knives until I was about twenty-four when I began to make handmade knives, crude but no longer made at home. A few years later, I had met and learned from makers like R.W. Loveless and R. L. Dozier. I made knives until the mid 1970s. I don’t make handmade knives anymore, as my hands aren’t what they used to be. However, I do have very talented makers in the United States and Japan who make knives that I am proud to put my name on. I design pocketknives, one hand knives, lockbacks, and fixed blade knives and have them made to our standards. ~A.G. Russell III

A.G. Russell has been in the knives and whetstones business for over 50 years. A.G. Russell knives are well known for their quality. A.G. Russell knives tend to be more traditional in style and look, with modern advances in material and design to create excellent knives.

I purchased this knife several months ago and to unlock it to close the blade, I still need a tool like a key to do so. It is still so stiff that it is too difficult to open just with my thumb. Is there something I can do to give this piece of the knife more flexibility? I like the knife otherwise. Rating: 1/10
Note - some of the K87's are stiff, if you find yours is too stiff, mail it in to us and we will adjust it.
