A.G. Russell Wharncliffe Swayback Jack
Item #: RUS-IJ13S
$165.00
A.G. designed this Swayback Jack with a Wharncliffe blade a number of years ago, and he and Phil Gibbs together worked out the engineering. Several months ago, we reached out to one of the manufacturers in Maniago, Italy who has been making traditional folders to see if they would be interested in making this knife. They enthustastically agreed and have sent us a couple of rounds of samples. We are extremely well pleased with the workmanship and have run a test on our life cycle tester at 200,000 openings. Passed with flying colors with no negative effect on the pivot or backspring.
It is a slip joint with no locking mechanism and no half-stop. You might find interesting an article in Blade magazine, which we contributed to, about the reasons for a half stop and A.G.'s opinion about that feature. Here is a link to the Blade Magazine half stop article.
The 2-7⁄8" Wharncliffe blade is M390 stainless at 59-61 Rc. For this first production, the handle scales are Stag, Smooth White Bone, and Desert Ironwood from our warehouse. Measures 3-5⁄8" closed. Weighs only 2.8 to 2.9 oz., depending on the handle material. Made in Maniago, Italy.

A.G. Russell Knives
From the age of nine I made homemade knives until I was about twenty-four when I began to make handmade knives, crude but no longer made at home. A few years later, I had met and learned from makers like R.W. Loveless and R. L. Dozier. I made knives until the mid 1970s. I don’t make handmade knives anymore, as my hands aren’t what they used to be. However, I do have very talented makers in the United States and Japan who make knives that I am proud to put my name on. I design pocketknives, one hand knives, lockbacks, and fixed blade knives and have them made to our standards. ~A.G. Russell III
A.G. Russell has been in the knives and whetstones business for over 50 years. A.G. Russell knives are well known for their quality. A.G. Russell knives tend to be more traditional in style and look, with modern advances in material and design to create excellent knives.
A.G. Russell Wharncliffe Swayback Jack Desert Ironwood - The quality and workmanship of this knife are excellent. The blade is extremely sharp, and fit and finish are also excellent. The use of Bohler 390 steel adds to the quality of this knife. I think the size of the knife is just about perfect. I certainly wouldn't want a shorter knife. Changes: I probably would like a different option than a bullet shield, but it's a minor complain. Rating: 10/10 Mike E. Ewing, NJ
