We have many requests for pocketknives with Carbon Steel blades. That is not so easy to accomplish today. There are very few factories that still have the capability to heat treat these steels and to get them delivered without severe rust problems. We have been searching for knives with carbon steel blades that meet our quality standards for several years. Based on our extensive inspection of these Roper folders, the quality we were looking for is there. Roper is also providing a brown leather pouch that will hold the knife in a horizontal position on your belt. While these knives are not exclusive to A. G. Russell Knives, they are available in very few places.

These knives are what you might have found in your Granddad's pocket. Made from tough 1065 Carbon Steel at 58-60 Rc., they will hold an edge well and are easy to re-sharpen. You can dig out your granddad's old Arkansas Stone and keep them sharp the old fashioned way or use our Ceramic Sharpener. Either will work well. Be prepared to take more care of your blade though to keep it from staining and rusting. We suggest using our Rust Free™ after use (RF125). The handle scales are Stag and Zebra Wood. Made in China.

Roper Knives

Roper Knives are really attractive and very well made knives despite their low price. Every Roper knife is designed to be used and carried on a daily basis and performs effectively. Roper Knives offers some rather unique designs while still managing to maintain a certain traditional style and feel.

Roper Laredo Carbon Steel Trapper ROP-02SGLS - While I like the idea of an old fashion carbon steel knife (which is why I ordered it), and while on first look this knife looks just like an old-timer, the execution of the handle scales is rather poor. The transition from wood to the brass spacer to stag is rather rough. The brass spacer sticks out and it does not feel good in the hand at all. I almost feel like I need to rework this. Of course, I could hope that it will smooth over in my pocket over time, but I don't think I have the 200 years required for that to happen. I get that this is made in China, but if Roper puts its name behind it, then they also need to execute some sort of quality control. Otherwise, it turns into Chinese crap. This is what this in fact is at this point, far as the handle scales are concerned. Changes: If the manufacturer is incapable of doing intricate work, don't do intricate work. Just leave the spacers and the stag piece out and provide it with wooden scales only. Alternatively, get it made somewhere where they know what they're doing. Like the Mazarin Arno that I ordered, which is absolutely superb. Rating: 3/10. Click here for customer image. Hartmut U. Brandon, MS
