Released in 1997, the original Spyderco Native® quickly set the standard as an affordable, ergonomic and lightweight folder and has been a constant in the Spyderco product line. Part of Spyderco's C.Q.I. (Constant Quality Improvement) program, the Native design has evolved over time yet staying true to its roots. Users started to ask for a longer version of the Native that was better suited to larger hands. Introduced in 2019 the Native Chief takes the proven design of the Native and extends it to approximately one third longer.
Spyderco has long been an industry leader in the use of exotic, high-performance blade steels. After years of using the best materials the world's leading steel manufacturers could provide, they decided it was time to create their own. In close cooperation with Crucible® Industries, Spyderco has developed CPM SPY27—a particle metallurgy stainless steel containing a proprietary mix of alloys, including vanadium, molybdenum, niobium, nitrogen, and cobalt. This remarkable composition, enhanced by the amplifying effects of cobalt and the state-of-the-art Crucible Particle Metallurgy process, is produced exclusively for Spyderco. Every knife made with this steel will also have a distinctive cobalt-blue handle color that highlights its elite pedigree.
This Native Chief showcases the exclusive CPM SPY27 blade steel in the signature cobalt-blue fiberglass-reinforced-nylon (FRN) handle. The blade features a fully accessible Trademark Round Hole™ for quick, one-handed opening with either hand. The 4-1/8" blade has a plain edge with a satin finish and a hardness of 60-62 Rc. The cobalt blue injection-molded FRN scales have a Bi-Directional Texture™ pattern for a non-slip grip. The pocket clip is reversible for a tip-up or down left or right-hand carry.
